The Human Side of Lyme contains much material that I have written over the last 8 years, published abstracts, whole articles and many previously unpublished papers. I have included illustrative Clipart whenever possible. There are case history stories and editorial essays concerning "tick-borne issues". If you feel they are appropriate for your patients'/clients'/friends' reading, just let them know the address or copy the story for their use. Each case history may fit some aspect of many of your friends or patients. (August 22, 2005)Virginia T. Sherr, MD

Evidence-based guidelines for the management of Lyme disease (im Cache)"This report, completed in November 2003, is intended to serve as a resource for physicians, public health officials and organizations involved in the evaluation and treatment of Lyme disease."
Highlights of Guidelines
- "Since there is currently no definitive test for Lyme disease, laboratory results should not be used to exclude an individual from treatment."
- "Lyme disease is a clinical diagnosis and tests should be used to support rather than supersede the physician's judgment."
- "The early use of antibiotics can prevent persistent, recurrent, and refractory Lyme disease."
- "The duration of therapy should be guided by clinical response, rather than by an arbitrary (i.e., 30 day) treatment course."
- "The practice of stopping antibiotics to allow for delayed recovery is not recommended for persistent Lyme disease. In these cases, it is reasonable to continue treatment for several months after clinical and laboratory abnormalities have begun to resolve and symptoms have disappeared."
- Diagnostic Concerns
- Treatment Considerations
" ... combination antibiotic treatment withare examples of combination regimens that have proven successful in clinical practice, although controlled clinical trials are lacking in persistent, recurrent and refractory Lyme disease."
- oral amoxicillin, cefuroxime, or (more recently) cefdinir combined with
- a macrolide (azithromycin or clarithromycin)
(Cefdinir

"Minimal inhibitory concentrations and minimal borreliacidal concentrations providing 100% killing of the final inoculum were determined by a standardised methodology in Barbour-Stoenner-Kelly-medium after 72 h of incubation. The rank order of potency was
ceftriaxone>cefuroxime-axetil>cefixime, cefdinir>cefpodoxime>cefaclor >ceftibuten, loracarbef>cefetamet-pivoxil, apramycin.
Our study demonstrates the superior in vitro effectiveness of ceftriaxone with good to excellent activity with the oral agents cefuroxime-axetil, cefixime and cefdinir against B. burgdorferi under strictly standardised test conditions.")

The Lyme Disease Association (LDA), an organization which recently expanded its focus nationally, is dedicated to Lyme disease education, prevention, and raising research dollars. In its search for a cure for chronic Lyme, the LDA has already funded dozens of research projects coast to coast, some of which are featured in peer-reviewed journals, such as Journal of the American Medical Association, JAMA. In addition, the LDA has sponsored several national medical conferences, including the first to focus on the problems of children with Lyme disease. ...Since the LDA's inception, ninety-seven cents of every dollar raised has been used on programs. In the past year since going national and affiliating, the LDA and its new affiliates have raised over $2 million to fight the disease.
"Unfortunately, much more funding is needed, and we need a facility that concentrates its efforts on finding the answers to this Lyme enigma," said Pat Smith, president of the LDA.æ To that end, the LDA and its affiliate, GLDTF, are creating an endowed Lyme Disease Research Center at Columbia University ("Center"). Brian Fallon, MD, associate professor of clinical psychiatry and director of the current Lyme Disease Program at New York Psychiatric Institute, will be the Center's director.æ He is considered by many to be the leading expert on neuropsychiatric manifestations of Lyme disease.æ The LDA has funded some of his past research including the study which provided him with data needed to obtain the recently awarded $4.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for studying the effects of Lyme disease treatment using state-of-the-art brain imaging.æ

The California Lyme Disease Association, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1990 by a group of individuals who had personal experience with Lyme disease. They wanted to do something to help people who were suffering needlessly because doctors were not well informed about this newly emerging infection. Many legitimate Lyme patients could not get diagnosed or treated, and, for those who did, a quick and simple cure was often elusive. Education and support services were desperately needed. The first Board of Directors of the CALDA decided the goals of the CALDA should be:

"Proposal for LymeRICK topics to work on
I suggest all LymeRICK discussion group members pick a favorite topic and start working on covering it ... later we discuss the collected material in the group in order to reach consensus and thus in time I hope the LymeRICK group will be able to present the best and most extensive reviews ever made on every topic regarding tick borne diseases :)
In the past the intention of the LymeRICK group was not really fulfilled, since most people that entered the group came there to seek information, very few were able to provide articles and reviews. Finally, the group outlived itself when the ILADS discussion group was created. (ILADS offers to ILADS members a discussion forum on yahoo groups.)
- The more complete the reviews the better, so any input -critique, comment, additional references, improvement of language etc.- is very welcome both to be displayed in the submitted form or in upcoming reviews.
- Non-members: please send your notes to kroun@ulmar.dk.
Well, I still add my own work and try to keep the LymeRICK site, reviews / links updated as much as time allows me ...
SO if YOU want to share your scientific work, reviews, pictures, video's (whatever related to TBI) either on my webserver or you want LymeRICK's links to point to your work elsewhere on the Internet - you're very welcome to send me a note :)
occasional file access trouble
We know several reasons for slow or no access to our webserver LymeRick (no such problems seem to arise accessing individual files using the Search LymeRick button, J. Gruber):
- We pay for a 50/5 megabit broadband connection, but sometimes give slower access via Internet, depending on activity and demand... If 10 people at the same time access MK-videomicroscopy.html and try to download the many videomicroscopy files simultaneusly.. Which happens when I send link to MMI with many users - our system can simply not provide file transfer fast enough to all that ask for it. Try later...
- Rarely power supply fall out may cause a server crash. We have to restart manually when we find out the webserver is down. If it happens when we are away on holiday, it may take weeks before webserver computer get restarted, as we does not have help. We dont want to give other access code to our private computer network for safety reasons. Patient data / diaries must be protected.
- When the automatic virus scanner runs and find an infected file, it shuts Internet access to our webserver for safety reason, until we have handled the problem and checked system is virus free again. During holiday make take weeks until we get home and fix..
- During time of file backup the webserver computer may also be slower to respond.
- We shut and disconnect the power to the webserver in thunderstorm, turn it on again when storm is over.. To protect equipment and data in case of lightning. Try later or next day.
- Our cable TV and Internet service provider is currently working on changes in our net. For months we have experienced net fall out, sometimes many times per day, each lasting several minutes. The work on network is supposed to be completed late august.
- When I checked today (August 10, 2012) I could reproduce the load error problem of the persistent-borreliosis list in both my android phone and IE repeatedly, while Firefox could load it, but there was apparently a temporary file access problem to the external style sheet file, since the typography was without CSS styles? The problem seem to have been solved after I copied the files from backup. I can now again load the list in all 3 systems, with the CSS styles working.

"To get the best out of Sarah Myhill's website, please also read:The aim of this website is to give individuals access to all the information and some tests they need to take control of their own health. Everyone should follow The general approach to maintaining and restoring good health, which involves eating a stoneage diet, taking a basic package of nutritional supplements, ensuring a good night's sleep on a regular basis and getting the right balance between work, exercise and rest. Because we live in an increasingly polluted world, we should probably all be doing some sort of detox regime. Start with Your very good health!
Please, also note that what is contained within this website are my opinions, which I believe have a scientific and logical basis. Some of the advice may be over and above National Guidelines. To access NICE Guidelines please go to NICE
Symptoms and tests help identify the underlying mechanisms that cause disease. Common mechanisms include allergies, sugar and carbohydrate addiction, poor mitochondrial function, poor antioxidant status, poor thyroid and adrenal function, toxic stress, poor detoxification and methylation and so on. All these can be tested for, identified and corrected using nutritional supplements and possibly hormones. Once the general approach to restoring health has been applied, these tests will help to identify the bolt-on extras for other disease processes."

On April 18, 2007, LymeInfo email list moderator Rose passed away unexpectedly at the age of 59. Rose had been a chronic Lyme patient and advocate for many years. She was a beautiful, compassionate, loving and supportive person. Rose was also a beautiful singer, and she enjoyed karaoke very much.Karen J. "Rose" Rose served as LymeInfo moderator from 2002-2007. She had been previously known around the Lyme community for her postings on various Lyme email groups. All who knew her knew she was very warm, kind and dedicated. In joining LymeInfo, she was eager to make sure that the information needs of all Lyme patients were met.
A New Diagnostic Tool And A New Drug Therapy Provide Major Weapons Against Surging Epidemic.. While treating hundreds of Chronic Lyme patients in my Maryland-based Family Practice in recent years, I was fortunate to come upon an already existing but little noticed physiologic test of optic nerve function - the "Visual Contrast Sensitivity" test, or VCS - that can tell a physician in five minutes whether or not the patient is suffering from the harmful effects of neurotoxins on the brain's ability to distinguish contrast between black, white and gray. The optic nerve deficit mirrors the adverse effect of neurotoxins throughout the body.
The good news for Lyme patients everywhere is that VCS now gives the physician a reproducibly reliable, inexpensive and non-invasive test (it takes only five minutes) that makes a virtually foolproof diagnosis of Chronic Lyme readily available....
Cholestyramine Treatment: Cholestyramine, the original drug approved for treatment of hypercholesterolemia, has previously been reported to enhance the elimination rates of a variety of toxins, presumably by interruption of enterohepatic recirculation through toxin entrapment in its polymeric structure and/or anion-exchange process.

PhilosophyDisease is in the details. And those details are in the raw, primary data. Rather than having a third party decide what is relevant to your health, at VoxHealth we provide summary statistics and let you be the judge.
Our data source is reliable: a set of several thousand anonymized medical records from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Look up a disease to find out which medications are most commonly prescribed, or search a set of symptoms to find matching diagnoses. Rate medications you have takenand find others with similar experiences. Or post a possible explanation for trends that pop up from our analyses.
